8 Creative Ways to Bond and Keep Your Kids Busy

By Tammy Machmali

This is the perfect time to learn something new and have fun! I came up with 8 ways to stay creative at home with your kids and maybe learn something new while social distancing. Explore something new and exciting to do, whether it be by yourself or with the family, and have a great time doing it!

  1. Start Doodling

Doodling is one of my favorite things to do. It can be a really therapeutic way to just let go on paper. You don’t need to think too much or try too hard. It is a fun way to really externalize your thoughts and surroundings. Doodling in a sketchpad or on paper! I personally love this elegant kit

  2. Make your own drawing

Grab a paper, pencil, pen, markers and start expressing yourself. It is a great way to RELAX and relieve stress while focusing on your creative voice. Look at it as a game and just write, or draw. I find it the most rewarding when I give myself the time to do so without judgment. I often create my best work after I start with an intention of freeing my inner creative self instead of intending to create a masterpiece. You can even draw or create your own coloring book pages.

  3. Start your own Watercolor painting

I find watercolors really relaxing and easy to use. I like this kit (linked below) from Amazon that comes with everything you need to create a beautiful work of art that you can be proud of and hang in your home! Here is a great watercolor kits for beginners adults

  4. Tie-dye

This is the perfect time to play with color and  turn your old white t-shirt or socks into an exciting new colorful creation. I love making these tie-dyes because you can never truly predict what it will look like at the end.

  5. Make your own Jewelry

There’s something special about making your own handmade accessories. You can’t really go wrong because you decide how you want it to look and you can pour in some LOVE and additional care that you won’t get in store! Make some fabulous pieces for yourself or as a gift to a loved one. Here is a link to a jewelry kit.

  6. Make a photo album or a scrapbook

This is a great time to go through old photos and sort them out to create a book of memories. I made a photo album of our last trip to Japan. Since I didn’t have images printed out, and wanted to save time, I ordered one online, but you can  print out the pictures yourself at home and create your own book to decorate and truly make your own!

  7. Start Calligraphy

I find calligraphy relaxing and useful when I want to write a personal card or illustrate my design work. It can be really exciting and gets easier as you practice. This is a great relaxing activity and builds muscle memory. You can use a regular pen or a calligraphy pen and create something awesome. I bought my Tombow pen  from Amazon (this is the one I am using) . You can use blank paper or grid paper for hand lettering. Here a free tutorial for calligraphy and hand lettering.

  8. Meditate

Meditation has so many benefits, especially when it comes to relieving stress and anxiety. It can help clear your energy and with concentration, giving you a more calm and renewed mindset. Meditation anti-stress music can also assist in calming your brain nerves.

This is a great time to meditate and teach our kids how to do so too.

I know that Creativity helps to view life differently and deal better with uncertainty. After all, I noticed especially now that creative people are better able to live with uncertainty because they can adapt their thinking to allow for the flow of the unknown.

So yes, go ahead and explore something new and exciting to do, whether it be by yourself or with the family, and have a great time doing it! I would love to hear from you. Please let me know what fun activities you are doing with your family.
