How Grounding Practices Boost Mental Health

Written by Tammy Machmali

Hey there! I want to share about something really important in my daily life – grounding. I'm a Scorpio, a water sign, and I tend to get impatient and jump around a lot. Grounding helps me stay steady and focused.so grounding becomes my anchor.

So, what exactly is grounding? It's the art of pulling yourself back into the present when your mind spirals or emotions become overwhelming. Through mental or physical techniques, grounding offers stability and balance during emotional turbulence.

When you “ground” yourself, you reconnect with the present moment; basically it is a mindfulness experience. The act of realigning with the surrounding environment is also called “earthing.” Feeling ungrounded can stem from several situations: You try to accomplish too many things at once. You've overcommitted your time and energy.

Grounding seems to enhance sleep quality, regulate the cortisol rhythm throughout the day and night, alleviate pain, diminish stress, transition the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic activation, boost heart rate variability, accelerate the healing of wounds, and lower blood viscosity.

Adding earthing to your routine with simple techniques might be beneficial if you are experiencing:

  1. Anxiety or Depression:

  2. Chronic Fatigue:

  3. Cardiovascular Disease:

  4. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Memories:

  5. Struggling with Pain and Inflammation:

You may ask How do I start grounding myself?

Begin with simple steps, like focusing on your breath. Sit in a quiet place, close your eyes, and take deep, slow breaths.

Now, There are 5 other grounding techniques that will help you step into mindfulness. Feel free to choose the one that feels easy and right for you. Let's explore the types of earthing techniques that focus on reconnecting your energy with the earth:

  1. Walking Outside Barefoot: A simple yet effective method, walking barefoot outside allows direct contact with the earth.

    • Laying on the Ground: Recline on the ground for a direct and grounding connection with the earth's energy. Or, if you haven't heard it before, just go hug a tree.

    • Going Swimming or Taking a Bath: Water can be a great source for earthing. Consider swimming or taking a bath with Epsom salt if possible.

    • Gardening: Connecting with the earth through gardening provides a grounding experience.

    • Using Grounding Mats, Blankets, Patches, and Socks: can also guide with earthing.

  2. Mental Techniques: Engage your mind with exercises like counting backward from 100. Shift your focus away from anxiety or overwhelm by focusing on your breath and being present in the moment.

  3. Physical Techniques: Reconnect with the present through body and senses. Ask yourself where you are. What do you see, smell, and feel? Focus on sensations like the feeling of your feet on the ground or the texture of an object.

  4. Emotional Self-Care Techniques: Nurture your emotional well-being with activities like watching a favorite movie or engaging in a joyful hobby, like painting or ceramics.
